Is there a perfect time to hire a sleep consultant?
Short answer: Nope! There are so many ways to work with babies and toddlers to improve their sleep. I have personally seen success from age 2 months to 4 years!
If I could pick a perfect time?
When your baby is between 4-6 months old.
Why?
This is the first time in your baby's life that they are developmentally ready develop healthy independent sleep skills.
They are coming out of the 4th trimester, and day by day are becoming more alert and aware of the world around them!
Their sleep cycles are starting to look more like an adult sleep cycle.
They now for the first time are able to recognize routines and cues, and their days and nights are becoming more and more predictable.
This is the time to come in with a solid routine around sleep to set up healthy sleep hygiene and prevent bad habits (that are hard to break) from forming.
Things do to promote healthy sleep for baby early on:
1. "Eat, Play, Sleep" schedule
2. Full feeds during the day
3. Consistent routine before nap + bedtime (even phrases you say matter!)
4. Practice the "pause" + give your baby a few minutes to figure it out on their own before you rush to their rescue. This is how they will discover they are capable of getting themselves to sleep!
5. Remember that 1 sleep cycle is about 45 minutes long. There is a period of lighter sleep at the end of the cycle where your baby may stir- it's important to give them a chance to link to another sleep cycle- as this process repeats itself several times during a full nap, and many times during 11-12 hour nighttime sleep.
